Risk, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments for hemophilia

Risk, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments for hemophilia

Hemophilia is a rare blood disorder that mainly affects the clotting function of red blood cells (RBC) in the body. RBCs have special clotting proteins (also referred to as clotting factors) that enable the cells to bind and harden, thus sealing off the wound to curb bleeding. Hemophilia results in a deficiency of these vital clotting factors and simultaneously increases the risk of spontaneous bleeding. The inability of the body to clot is mostly observed in pregnant women post-delivery, middle-aged adults, and seniors. However, the severity of the symptoms varies depending on several underlying health problems. Main cause of hemophilia This blood disorder is a genetic condition caused due to a unique mutation of the DNA structure. This triggers cells to behave abnormally due to the absence or low amount of clotting proteins. Men are at a higher risk of inheriting this genetic code in comparison to women. The inheritance pattern also differs depending on which parent is carrying the triggering chromosome. Inheritance pattern Men have one X and one Y chromosome, whereas women have two X chromosomes. Boys inherit one X chromosome only from their mother and one Y chromosome from their father. Girls inherit one X chromosome from each parent.
5 things you must know about memory care facilities

5 things you must know about memory care facilities

Sometimes, caring for your loved one at home with Alzheimer’s or dementia becomes extremely challenging. To make life easier for your loved one and you, you may want to consider memory care for them. Memory care is a type of senior living that offers 24-hour care for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory disorders. If you’re wondering what memory care facilities are all about, and whether it is beneficial for seniors, then you’ve come to the right place. Here, we discuss some of the key things you need to know about memory care facilities. Trained staff Perhaps the best thing about memory care facilities is that they have specially trained professionals to help people with dementia. The staff tends to the seniors who experience cognitive decline most effectively; they also receive training in other important areas, such as feeding tubes and oxygen supplementation. Regular training sessions and experience help the staff understand people with memory problems better each day, because of which they are able to provide the most suitable care to all kinds of individuals. Although staff training in memory care facilities can vary from one state to another, generally, whoever comes in contact with the residents — including housekeepers and dishwashers — need to receive special training.
An overview on Alzheimer’s disease

An overview on Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common forms of Dementia. It causes the brain cells to degenerate, causing a continuous decline in mental ability. The early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s are memory loss and difficulty in performing familiar tasks. It does not have a definite cure; however, medication and treatment can help slow down the progression of the disease, resulting in a better quality of life. Symptoms: One of the primary symptoms of Alzheimer’s is memory loss. A family member or a close friend would be able to notice gradual changes in their loved one as they begin to forget where they’ve kept their things, have difficulty remembering, or keeping up with conversations. Below is a list of activities that are hampered due to Alzheimer’s disease. Memory Reasoning Taking decisions Personality changes Performing everyday tasks Behavioral changes Mood swings Speaking or writing Problem solving Causes: The causes of Alzheimer’s are not known; however, the problem mainly exists in the brain cells that are disrupted, causing neurons to die. These occurrences generally take place in the part of the brain that controls one’s ability to remember (memory) and spread to other parts of the brain. Researchers believe that changes occur in two proteins present in the brain, forming Plaques and Tangles.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension – Causes, symptoms, and preventive measures

Pulmonary arterial hypertension – Causes, symptoms, and preventive measures

The heart is the most vital organ for one simple reason—it pumps fresh oxygenated blood throughout the body. And to enable this function, the left ventricle pumps fresh blood out into the system, while the right ventricle sends oxygen-poor blood back to the lungs to receive oxygen and repeat the process. The left side is naturally designed to pump with more pressure, but if the pressure is too high, the resulting force can cause hypertension. What is pulmonary arterial hypertension? Pulmonary arterial hypertension occurs when the right ventricle pumps blood with excessive force. The artery walls become narrow and force the blood to push more against the delicate tissue, increasing pressure while pumping blood back to the lungs. This can also force the blood to back up and strain the right ventricle, pushing it beyond pumping capacity. This condition is a result of the structural integrity of the blood vessels being compromised, forcing the walls to close in and narrow the opening. As the pressure builds up gradually, pulmonary arterial hypertension can result in complete organ failure if not addressed in time. The reduced blood supply to the lungs also results in less fresh oxygenated blood being sent to the brain, leading to further health complications.
Understanding the different aspects of sleep apnea

Understanding the different aspects of sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening sleep disorder. It is characterized by repetitive obstruction in breathing while asleep or even the cessation of breathing. Treating the condition is possible, but the problem lies in the diagnosis of it. Estimatedly, a large number of patients frequently go undiagnosed, making it vital for one to be aware of the causes and signs of the condition. Signs The condition is divided into three categories: obstructive, central, and complex sleep apnea syndrome. The first is caused by the relaxation of throat muscles, and the second occurs when the brain fails to send the right message to the muscles. Complex sleep apnea syndrome, however, is a combination of the first two. The signs and symptoms of the three are mostly the same and are as given below. Shortness of breath Repeated interruptions in breathing while asleep Day fatigue Irritability Loud snoring Morning headaches Waking up abruptly Causes Obesity Obesity is one of the leading causes of sleep apnea. The fat depositions in the respiratory tract make it narrower. This leads to difficulty in breathing, resulting in the sleeping disorder over time. Anatomy Obstructive sleep apnea can also be caused by the position or size of certain parts of the anatomy.
